The Nian Monster by Andrea Chang

Happy Multicultural Children’s Book Day!  To celebrate, I am reviewing The Nian Monster by Andrea Chang. I really loved this story!  In Shanghai, three days before the New Year, Xingling learns about the Nian monster that would attack villages on New Year’s Day thousands of years ago.  When the villagers learned of his three weaknesses: the color red, fire, and loud noises, they become the traditions that are used to keep the Nian monster away.  Unfortunately, Nian is no longer afraid of any of those things and has come to eat Xingling and destroy Shanghai.  However, Xingling is a clever little girl and she has a plan to save herself and the city from Nian.  The illustrations in the book are beautiful. If you are wanting to know more about Chinese New Year, this is a great book for you.  I enjoyed reading about the legend of the Nian monster and learning about different places in Shanghai.  A glossary of Chinese words is included in the back.  I thought this story was very cute and is an excellent read-aloud.

I read it to 2nd and 3rd graders and they loved it! We are an international studies school and many of them take Chinese, so they were correcting my pronunciation. It was awesome!
